The decision to make students with HIV sit their college exams in a separate room at a school in north China’s Shanxi Province has caused controversy online.

Established in 2011, the Red Ribbon School in Linfen City is the first and only high school in China set up to cater for children and young people with HIV/AIDS.

On June 7, a total of 16 students, who all became infected through mother-to-child transmission, are due to take their college entrance examinations.

They will do so in a separate room, as part of a preferential policy approved by the local education authorities, according to media reports.

There have been angry comments at the move on Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter.

One post noted that, since HIV can only be transmitted in three ways: sexual contact, blood, and from mother to the infant, there is no need to provide a separate exam room.

Others have said this kind of special treatment could intensify discrimination or misunderstanding of those living with HIV.

Guo Xiaoping, who has been principal of the Red Ribbon School for over 15 years, explained the move, saying that although society has progressed, discrimination still exists.

"It’s still unrealistic to say all the discrimination of HIV/AIDS patients has been rooted out. If my students take the exam in the usual exam rooms, there might be resistance by other students. I don’t want to see the occasion used to hurt my students’ feelings," said Guo.

The Red Ribbon School offers free education, accommodation and medical treatment for 33 students from across the country.
