The seaweed-based drug, called Oligomannate, can be used for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's, according to a statement from China's drug safety agency.

The approval is conditional however, meaning that while it can go on sale during additional clinical trials, it will be strictly monitored and could be withdrawn should any safety issues arise.

In September, the team behind the new drug, led by Geng Meiyu at the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said they were inspired to look into seaweed due to the relatively low incidence of Alzheimer's among people who consume it regularly.

In a paper in the journal Cell Research, Gengs team described how a sugar contained within seaweed suppresses certain bacteria contained in the gut which can cause neural degeneration and inflammation of the brain, leading to Alzheimers.

This mechanism was confirmed during a clinical trial carried out by Green Valley, a Shanghai-based pharmaceutical company that will be bringing the new drug to market.

As the Guardian reports, Clinton did not hold back when she spoke at a screening of Netflix’s The Great Hack, a documentary about the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal.

There, Clinton told the crowd Zuckerberg “should pay a price” for the harm Facebook is doing to democracy, specifically in regards to Zuckerberg’s choice to allow people to run political ads on Facebook that contain outright lies.

Clinton pointed out that by Zuckerberg allowing this, it will have an impact on upcoming elections around the globe, including the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

“When Facebook is the principal news source for more than half of the American people, and the only source of news that most of them pay any attention to, and if it announces that it has no responsibility for the airing of false ads…” Clinton said, “how are you supposed to get accurate information about anything, let alone candidates running for office?”

Kara Fan from San Diego, CA was won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge in St. Paul, Minnesota. Fan came up with a nano particle liquid bandage that could replace the overuse of antibiotics and potentially reduce the development of superbugs.

“I want to show my invention of the nanosilver liquid bandage to more people. I think it is important for more people to be aware of antibiotic-resistance bacteria crisis and do something about it,” Fan said.

Professor Guo Bing is taking action against Hangzhou safari park, after it replaced its existing fingerprinting system with the new technology.

“I [filed this case] because I feel that not only my [privacy] rights are being infringed upon but those of many others,” Guo, from Zhejiang University of Sci-Tech, said according to an audio recording of an interview posted by state-run Beijing News.

Guo is attempting to force the park to return the money he paid for an annual pass and highlight its misuse of data gathered by the software.

A court in Fuyang has accepted his case. He questioned why a wildlife park would need to collect such information and had doubts over data security and who would be responsible if any were leaked.

The case could possibly open wider debate in China over the use of such technology.
